After the amazing day spent in Ayutthaya, next stop is Lopburi, one of the oldest cities of Thailand, named as the city of monkeys, where there's spectacular ruins and wild macaques all around the city.

I had the feeling of being into a movie

  mix with Indiana jones

and Rise of the Planet of the Apes!

Originally the city was famous for the historic ruins, now days is getting famous more for the heaps of macaques around the city.

They are pretty friendly and curious, but be careful on your personal effects like glasses or camera as they are clever thief.

One of them tried to get my sun glasses but i've been faster then him!

Lopburi is a real Thai countryside experience where locals lead a simple, quiet life made of farming, home made food that they sell at local street food markets, restaurants and few Guesthouses.

Lopburi is a itinerary that most of tourist skip,

but i do personally recommend to visit this amazing city.

Even if the ruins are not impressive as those in Ayutthaya, you will have an experience far away from other touristic city where locals even if they don't speak English will gift you a smile and a "hello".

How to get to Lopburi

From Ayutthaya the best option    to reach Lopburi is by train.

If you are in Bangkok and you really want to visit Lopburi

there are mini van and buses departing from the northern bus terminal 'Mor Chit' reaching Lopburi bus terminal in two hours.

Bus ticket from Bangkok to Lopburi:

100 BHT (2,60 €)

Lopburi train station is located in the old town, where all the  places of interest are near by.

That's what i did.

A 70 Km journey, on the north of Ayutthaya

from Ayutthaya station to Lopburi station taking one hour.

Train ticket :

Economy class 13 THB (0,40 €)

Firs class 58 THB (1,60 €)

Get around Lopburi

Everything is concentrate in the Old Town, where the train station is, as i mentioned before in How to get to Lopburi,

and all the places of interest are near by distance walk within' 10 min.

There are  few taxi and motorbike taxi around the busiest places if you do need a lift somewhere.

How long you should stay in Lopburi

As i didn't know much about Lopburi, i decided, once i arrived at the station, to book a room at the closer Guest House near by.

I wanted take it easy and having enough time to visit the city properly.

I found the Nett Hotel, a cozy hotel two minute walk from the station that charge me for one night 250 BHT (6 €) , breakfast included.

Ok, Lopuri is quiet small.

Basically in a couple of hours i've already visited all the main attraction but i booked a room already, so what to do?

i just wandered in the city meeting locals and try some food from the market.

If you do have counted time,

couple of hours are enough to visit main attraction.

When the dinner time came, only one restaurant was open near by with no one around.

Just me and a dog.

I got at this restaurant where i had  some fried chicken and some noodles on the side, everything was yummy and the owner was super kind.

Once i got back at the hotel i found this funny 60 years old man that was working there.

We had a smoking, chat and drinking beer night, talking about his past travel and my future trip destinations.

Lopburi was an incredible experience to me and  definitely a must visit.

Between The Ruins

Prang Sam Yot  is basically the the monkey headquarters temple, 5 minutes walk from the station where every year

on the last Sunday in November, the city hosts the Monkey Festival, a  locals’ way of thanking the over 3.000 macaques

for bringing them good luck and fortune.

Facing from the other side there's the Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat an amazing complex where actually i found my self alone,

it was amazing walking between this historic ruins all for myself.

The ruin complex is not large, compare to Ayutthaya or Sukothai but i think every place, smaller or bigger i've been visiting in Thailand

has something special itself that worth the visit.

I don't know if it's because the kindness of people,

or because is a step out from the crowded touristic places,

but i loved the charming Lopburi.
