From Bangkok to Chiang Mai

Landing in the hot, humid and chaotic Bangkok, with all the madness and beauty itself, going through ruined temples, monkeys, natural parks all way long to a 800 km railway up to north to reach Chiang Mai, enjoying the incredible atmosphere of the city surrounded by the Himalaya's Mountains where having a cup of coffee at one of the many cafè is simple as amazing.
Flying for few money to Phuket, the dream Island, surrounded by incredible nature and happiness of locals, where walking on the streets
your nose will be hit by the smell of fresh food and the sea saltiness.
Waking up every day getting true smiles and kindness.

All of that is Thailand.

Best Time To Visit Thailand

Split in 6 months of wet season three months of dry season, the cooler period, and three months of heat during the hot season.
Thailand temperature are going from 17° to 39°.
I was in Thailand from the second week of October until the first week of November where the wet season wasn't over yet
but i've been lucky with beautiful sunny days, well yeah, hot of course, but at least caught rain just for couple of days while i was in Phuket.
If you never experience a monsoon rain before, each rain drop is like bucket of water on you.

Differently from Europe,
Thailand,
doesn't have "the 4 seasons".

Check here the best time suitable for you:

Thailand Weather in February-May: From the middle of February to the middle of May is the hot season with April being the hottest month, perfect if you planning to visit beaches and islands in the South and the East of Thailand.

Thailand Weather in May-October: From the middle of May to the middl of October is the wet season where in the south side of Thailand
will keep rain until December with the north side getting cooler with less rainy days making a perfect period to visit mountains and hills with rice terrace.
Thailand Weather in October-February: From the middle of October to the middle of February is the dry season where the weather get cooler.
Is still hot, but bring appropriate clothes if you planning to go on high mountains like Doi Intanon
near Chiang Mai on the north side, as can get really cold. I've been there in the end of October...
T-shirt and short pants on a 2300 m mountain. No need to say anything, i know.
My Favourite Thai Food
As i'm a shrimps lover, Thailand is a place where you will probably have shrimps even at breakfast.
Thai cuisine offer a lot of delicious dishes, beside of shrimps of course, from spicy soups to fried noodles and rice of every kind.
With street food market and restaurants at every corners you wont starve.

Here are my favorite Thai dishes

As Thailand has been my first destination in Asia, what impressed me was the large numbers of restaurant stick one to each other and street food stalls everywhere.
I realized, by traveling in Asia, that food culture in Asia is bigger then what i thought.

Pad Thai
One of my favorite.
A well known Thai style dish,
a "Pad Thai a day get the doctor away".
Noodles mix with shrimps, nuts, some veggies and eggs.
A squeeze of lime on the top is a must!
Yummy!

Tom Yum Goong
The most famous Thai spicy soup.
Made with shrimps with a sour taste, the Tom Yum,
is a delicious soup that is getting famous all around the world,
i was surprised when i saw a Tom Yum served in a restaurant in Sydney!
Even if you don't fancy spicy food, as me, the taste is
surprisingly enjoyable.

Tom Kaa Gai
A chicken soup in light coconut cream with
lemon glass, cherry tomato and mushroom.
A balance of spicy, salty, sweet and sour soup that is a full meal all in one.
Add a portion of steamed rice, on the side.

Khao Phat
Thai fried rice.
Differently from the Chinese one, prepared with long grain rice,
the Thai fried rice is made it by Jasmine Thai rice.
There are different way that the fried rice is made it:
Chicken, beef, shrimps or with jus veggie's.
I used to order the one with chicken, shrimps, eggs, onion and sometimes tomato.
The fried rice is alway a good choice!

Pineapple fried rice...
Thai Pineapple Fried Rice
With shrimp, cashew nuts, and of course, pineapple!
When i saw it for the first time i wouldn't believe it.
Fruit with rice? naaaah!
Well, i tried and the taste is wow! A sour, salty and sweet flavor
that will explode in your mouth!
Yummy!
...and fried shrimps
And here we are on my favorite again,
unless you hate or you are allergic to shrimps you will loose your head
by dipping the fried shrimps in this chilly sweet and sour sauce!
Heaven!
Thailand Travel Tips

Thailand Visa
Show your passports at the immigration after filled up a form,
that the air company will provide for you during your flight, and a free 30-day visa will released to enter in Thailand by air,
and 15 days if you enter overland.

People from the US, UK, and EU doesn't need to apply for any visa.
This visa is easily extendable if you want to stay in the country for longer,by applying for a tourist visa in any Thai embassy beforehand
(this gives you 60 days).
Note that more and more countries in Southeast Asia are requiring you to show a proof of a flights out from it before allowing you to enter the country.
So make sure you make the necessary booking arrangements.

Passport
Passport, of course, with at least 6 months validity.
Bring with you few copies of it. If you would rent a scooter they might ask you the original passport as guarantee,
better pay few BHT more as deposit that you will get back.
Bring few copies of your passport with you.
Never leave your original passport.
Give them a copy of it!
Safety
As everywhere in the world of course there's few scams, but nothing else you need to worry about.
I met a lot of girls that were traveling solo and never heard a bad story from anyone

Thailand is a safe place to go
I went to Thailand without any health insurance as i'm young and fool, but if that will make you feel uncomfortable there is a large number
of on line insurances that will cover you from 10 to 30 days of travel with different range of prices.

Vaccination
Personally, i imagined my first solo trip as an adventure where i expected some excursion in jungles and remote areas.
So yes, i did basic vaccines such as Malaria, Yellow fever, Hepatitis A and B, Thyphus and Rabies.

Somebody says yes somebody says no

Unless you do not planning to stay in touristic area i wouldn't recommend to inject unnecessary drugs in your body.
I mean, all these vaccines to stay in a fancy 5 star resort? nah! A repellent against mosquitoes is enough, you will be fine!

Backpack or luggage?
Definitely a backpack.
Comfortable and easy to bring around with you on your shoulders, instead of a bulky trolley that you have to carry around all the time,
that will let you save time, space and energy.

Be as more comfortable as you can

I used a 50 L backpack that have enough space for all needs.
There are, of course, different size of backpack that can match better your needs.
What to pack
Thailand is hot and humid so bring enough comfortable and light clothes for your daily excursions as you will sweat a lot, also
a long sleeve shirt and a pair of pants that will allowed you to visit temples .
While Thailand has tropical weather if you do planing to visit the north side of Thailand with excursion that include mountains, bring
appropriate clothes as temperature can reach even 0° in winter.

You are not allowed to visit
sacred places
with naked shoulders and knees.
A hat to repair your head from the sun for sure.
Appropriate shoes to walk around, trust me you will walk a lot between parks, ruins, the cities itself and temples.
Also be prepared to take off your shoes often as in Thailand, as mostly in all Asia, you will take of your shoes not just for for temples but
also for cafè, restaurant and some shops.
A rain jacket, well if you forget it you can still buy it in some convenient store around, and also a rain fly if you want protect your bag from the rain especially for your electric devices.
If you planning to go on the islands definitely a suncream with high protection, i do have dark skin and i got burnt, the sun is hot over there.

Food and drinks
I heard while i was traveling in Asia, not just in Thailand, from many travelers that they got food poisoned or had some stomach disease.
Thank's it never happened to me, probably i do have a good health immunity.

Drink water from new bottles.
All the new bottles are wrapped by a plastic tape on the top, to ensure that wasn't filled with tap water.
To minimize the probability to get sick definitely do not drink tap water or any drink with ice cubes.
Before flying to Thailand do a full one week cure with probiotics.
Remember anyway to hydrated your body, drink water all day all the time.
Is really easy get sick from dehydration.

Money
BHT (baht)
Personally what i do usually at every trip i do is withdraw a generous amount of money before leaving, then change money
at the Money Exchange inside every Airport of the world.
True, you will pay commissions fee on it, but at least you wont pay commissions fees plus commission fees on currency that usually banks are doing.

All banks treatments
are different
I mean that's what my Italian bank is doing.
As i lived in UK and Australia i have to say they have travel prepaid cards that doesn't apply any fees, or any change on the currency.
That's amazing, and make the money change a thing you don't need to worye about it.

Electricity Socket
220V AC electricity.
Be sure to pack a
With a universal travel adaptor you still could use all your electronic gadgets.
Is a good item in any case if you will travel in different countries.

Apps that can help
GrabTaxi or Uber — A taxi hailing app for taxis.
Next Station — For navigate Bangkok’s MRT (train) .
iTranslate — Translate signs and menus instantly
